So I talked about some niche podcasts recently, and there’s a few more to come. But I’m going to tell you about a superb mainstream podcast that’s guaranteed to grab your interest and cure your podcast fatigue. I’m planning to write a post called ‘the best short podcasts’ and 99% Invisible will 101% be high on the list.
I just looked at its website for the first time and am quite surprised to find it calling itself ‘A tiny show about design’. I didn’t especially notice the design angle before – for me, it’s just vivid, interesting stories about all kinds of random stuff. I wouldn’t normally listen to a show about coins, or barbed wire, or mascots, but when it’s on 99% Invisible, I’m always glad I did.
Remember I hinted at being annoyed that your fave show Invisibilia had a rip-off name? Well, now you know why.
I’m just listening to episode 156 – Coin Check. It’s just so engrossing! I always get these really vivid images in my head while I’m listening. They pack a lot of stuff into their little show, and the production values are sky high. I wanted to include a pic of the host, Roman Mars, but I decided I prefer not to know what these people look like. (They always look wrong to me. Different to how their voice suggests they should look.)
So here’s a pic from another episode I highly recommend – number 152 – Guerrilla Public Service. What do you think this dude is up to?
Roman Mars closes every episode with something cute his little boy says. Like in a recent one, he tried to get the kid to say ‘mail kimp’ – you know, like in the adverts on Serial. The boy tries to refuse, but is outsmarted.
Interesting, weird, beautifully-crafted – what more can you ask for?
GO AND LISTEN RIGHT AWAY!
