Have you listened to the latest episode of Reply All, the show about the internet? As a fellow StartUp fan, you probably listen to Gimlet Media‘s first show regularly. It took a few episodes to get really good. At the end of episode four, I almost deleted the podcast from my app. It was good, but I wasn’t hooked. I gave it one more week and I’m glad I did. I started enjoying the show from episode five, which is about the internet’s first real celebrity: Jennicam.
Here is the episode’s blurb: “In 1996, 19-year-old Jennifer Ringley started the Jennicam, a 24-hour online chronicle of her life. Seven years later, she disappeared entirely from the internet. But why?”
The episode was as intriguing and insightful as it seemed. It let me have a peek into a world I didn’t know existed in a short, entertaining format. I have enjoyed all the episodes since then, but this week’s one – Love is Lies – was the best yet.
It’s about online dating scammers and it focuses on this 60-year-old woman who started again dating after she discovered her husband was cheating on her. She falls in love with an import/export mogul until she realises he is actually after her money. Her story is heartbreaking because even after finding out he’s a scammer, she can’t help have feelings for the guy and remembers their phone conversations fondly.
Do you also find that Reply All is getting better and better with each new episode?
Ps. I will not listen to A Prairie Home Companion after your meh review. This kind of show doesn’t particularly attract me anyway. I need a new podcast to get into though! Something to make me laugh out loud would be great – any recommendations?
